Facing new challenges

As I sit down to write this months Blog and update on the HAMster Weak Signal Group, I find there is a lot to reflect upon. Specially for those of us here in Texas.

As we approached the end of 2020 and looked into 2021 we knew we were going to still be dealing with a deadly global pandemic that appears to have no end in sight. But I can honestly say I never expected to also have to deal with an real life episode of Survivor and our survival skills would also be put to a test.

But that is exactly what we faced, with massive power outages, single digit temperatures and windchills in the - 5 to -15 degree range. This not only tested our skills to stay warm with out heat sources, function with out lights, tv and heaven forbid INTERNET. But on top of that we had to also worry about ice killing our antennas.

It was a rough week, but like everything there is always a bright light at the end of the tunnel and here we are just two days away from a massive winter storm that paralyzed Texas and once again enjoying 70 plus degree weather.

Say what you will, but Texas weather is definitely bi-polar.

The HAMster Group has been pretty active, multiple members have been really busy with major shack updates, equipment updates and antennas, more members than every are getting on VHF/UHF SSB and discovering the amazing contacts you can make there.

Our monthly HAM Talk Show will continue to focus on Weak Signal and promote this exciting aspect of Amateur Radio and VHF/UHF operating, but expand into EME operations. One of the most exciting aspects of the computer age, is the ability to work extremely weak stations which has opened the door for EME on 6 meters through 23cm for almost all hams who wish to put in the effort.

Our 3rd episode of HAM Talk turned out to be the most successful so far, and we received an amazing amount of feedback on the show, and are excited as we are putting on the final touches for Episode #4 which will be released later this coming week.

Keep in touch with us, as the HAMster Weak Signal Group begins planning for a HAMster VHF/UHF contest….That we will be sponsoring…..Plus we have plans to incorporate your HAMster # and activity into the June ARRL Contest and will be advertising nationally for everyone.

Let’s keep growing the HAMsters and making the group and important part of VHF/UHF activity around the nation.
